Artist Keith Carlson working on a painting at the Two Rivers Art Gallery in Prince George, BC. (February 2011)

I am a visual artist located in Prince George, BC, Canada.

For over 30 years, I taught high school art and enjoyed supporting my students on their journeys in art, including several who made a career out of it.  Over the years, I also created a fairly large body of work.  Now retired from teaching, I devote my time to painting and developing new ideas.  I will try and post a few of these paintings as I work. I also serve on various arts committees and boards.  I am also president of Artists’ Workshop and I show at  various events and galleries such as Studio  Fair and Artists’ Bazaar at Studio 2880.

My vision as an Artist:

I feel it is the role of the Artist to create a forum for ideas, thoughts and perceptions using elements and principles which are the structures and strictures of Art.

As Artists we can lead the way in creating new or altered perceptions in people. This might awaken people to the aesthetics of their immediate surroundings such as many early modern artists did; or give structure and clarity to thoughts, ideas and feelings so that they might be taken and examined and questioned.

We give the path; the viewer may (or may not) follow.

Images, signs and symbols hold in themselves the power to contain meanings which are both universal and personal.  When a work leaves the Artist’s hand, meaning is subject to the public domain. The Internet is a great place to explore this public meaning.  Even a written explanation of any one piece or serial is taken to have various meanings. This is why to explain is a limited exertion. Words do not equal expression. If it were so, there would be no room for poetry, music, Art.

As an Artist I have to be open to what an image or idea demands. At the same time one brings a point of view an idea of the whole or the subject. The combination imbued with the force of the artistic vision and mastery of the craft create a whole; ideally a poetic harmony which exists at various levels.
